Review: The IXUS 850IS is a very good camera and well worth the extra premium over similar cameras. The thing that makes this model different from the 800is or the 900 is the wide-angle lens. For anyone who loves to shoot landscapes, this is an absolute treat.
I've used this camera for a long time now and red eye is not a problem as long as you've got red eye reduction enabled. The manual mode is also an excellent option specially for indoor pictures. The auto-mode works very well outdoors and then there's also the option to increase the ISO to shoot at night without using the flash. The video mode is also excellent and the capture quality is again crystal clear both for the video and for sound. There are plenty of preset modes built in for the novice photographer and enough configuration options for the more advanced user.
The battery life on the camera is also top notch although Canon can improve this by adding a battery level indicator.
One of the first things I did when I purchased the camera was to also get a 2GB SD card for it. Canon don't provide a high capacity card with their cameras and that's across the board for all models. Amazon usually has great deals on cards.
Final thoughts - there's a good reason why this model has a great rating on Amazon and other sites. If you're in the market for a compact digital camera and you don't want to settle for second best - then the IXUS 850 deserves some serious consideration.
