Review: I recently bought the Canon MV960 camcorder to use with a Helmet-cam setup for mountain biking and skiing. It works just fine, but I have a few minor complaints.
1: You can hear the tape noise if using the built in Mic. They say somewhere that you cant use an external mic, but you can if recording from the AV input, ofcourse mic must be amplified to line level. 2: To record from the AV input, you have to put the camera in 'play' mode, not 'record' which is a bit dumb. also you need to fold the screen out and go through some menus, which isnt as easy as it should be. If it had a LANC port it would be much better, so that I could use a WIRED remote rather than the supplied IR remote (needs line-of-sight). 3: The build quality doesnt feel great, it's not quite a christmas cracker effort but its getting there. there again this means that the camera is pretty light weight. 4: The supplied AV lead has a straight-in plug, not a 90 degree plug. I had to make my own lead up because the supplied lead would almost certainly get snapped off when left in a rucksack - whilst recording from the helmet camera source.
however, I do recognise that I am using the camera for an unusual purpose, besides which it seems very good, perhaps it would be nice to get a higher capacity battery without having to buy as an extra.
Canon - If you add a LANC remote port and supply a 90 degree AV lead your on to a good one for the helmet camera market. failing that the SONY cameras just have the edge and are worth the extra cash! |
