Review: This Epson Stylus R1800 printer will produce excellent results but the original catridges make it expensive to run. There are some possible reasons why some people are not getting the best results.

Firstly some 3rd party cartridges are using dye inks when they should be pigment. Secondly some are making the blue ink cartridge contain blue ink - it should actually be purple despite the name ! So if you use 3rd party inks you need to make sure they are pigment and the right colours.

The second thing to watch is that if you are using colour control in programs like Paintshop Pro then they only show the profiles for the printer that is set as the default windows printer. If you test the printer and keep your existing printer as default you will be using the wrong colour profile and get poor colours. Always set the printer as default before using it.

The printer works well with a continuous ink system (CIS) provided you get the right inks. This makes it cost effective for large prints. It needs the DWARF cartridge type due to small clearance between heads and casing otherwise it will jam.

As with all Epson printers, use either Epson paper or good quality gloss coated photo paper to prevent paper dust clogging the heads.

Paper feed seems very good but the paper support could be better for the larger paper sizes. I have not tried printing CDs on the R1800 but I have on the R800 and have never been happy because the ink comes off too easily (same with all inkjets). It is better to print labels and stick them on.

The printer can print a test pattern and then analyse the results to see if it needs cleaning. This is a much better system than the clean once, print test pattern, clean again if its not right. I think it should also have a repeat initial charge option in case things get really blocked after a long storage period. Currently you have to download 3rd party software for this.

For best results print at least a page every day to keep the heads in top condition.
