Review: Having just upgraded from a HP 693C, this HP Deskjet 940c printer is a stunning change and shows just how many advances in printer technology have been made over the last couple of years. The drivers installed quickly without trouble on Win98SE/ME/2K (using a USB connection). During use the printer is exceptionally quiet and extremely fast with text, although slower when printing photos it's still one of the fastest in this price range. The photo output of the printer is excellent and I haven't even used the HP injet paper provided as output on standard paper is perfectly acceptable. When loaded with paper the paper goes in almost to the back of the printer meaning that it doesn't protrude beyond the the printers footprint this is a great improvement over older deskjet designs where I would find the paper would get battered or knocked out of the printer if overhanging the edge of a desk. Construction of the printer is exceptionally well designed and solid, it's pretty weighty but it is a desk printer and besides it doesn't shake about while printing as a result. Print speed isn't as high as the manufacturer's specs but with raw text printing after an initial 10 seconds of data transmission the printer is easily spurting out pages at close to 10ppm. The 940C comes with 2MB of memory, with memory prices so low these days it would be nice to see much higher buffers, but with most OS's providing print spooling and the speed of the USB connection I have never encountered the printer stopping to wait for the rest of a page to arrive. Overall this printer is perfect for the home and indeed any small office and worth the extra over the shoddy entry level printers that typically come free with PC's these days. So for just over a £100 it's a bargain and a quality HP one at that. (Though don't forget to buy a USB or parallel cable as one is not provided in the box). |
