Review: 3 stars may be a bit harsh for the Panasonic NVGS37B digital camcorder but I feel that I have to warn people that the Operating Instructions, written in Japanese English are, in my humble opinion, very inadequate. E.g. "Operating with remote control: The menu screen transition is the same as when the buttons on the main unit are used". I think I know what it means - or do I? And further on: "Using the remote control supplied will enable controlling almost all the functions of this camera to be controlled." It is a bit like reading one of those foreign menus translated into English. It also, for example, has a function called Quick Start. Unless I have missed it, (which I could have done) it does not tell you anywhere what Quick Start does for you - just that it consumes more power and how to turn it off. On the other hand it tells you about a dozen times that the camera may not work if you turn it on with the lens cap fitted - that came as a complete surprise - I thought that all cameras only operated if the lens was covered!
It is such hard work that I called Panasonic here in the UK to ask if they had an alternative instruction booklet but of course they do not. They sounded sheepish so I am pretty sure that they know it is rubbish. By comparison, I have just bought a new digital camera (Fuji Finepix) and I must say that their instructions are a model of clarity.
I think this is probably not a bad bit of kit if I had the patience to sit down and work it all out. However, the sad thing is that after a few months of ownership, I am still not sure whether it is any good. As it is, I now rather wish I had bought something else.
OK I admit it. I am not very patient and I am not technically minded but my advice is - unless you have the patience or the knowledge or you have a friend who has the knowledge, think twice about buying this one |
