Review: I had a TomTom 500 for over a year and was very happy with it. Bought the 710 because we're off to Ireland this summer. Worked right out the box (like it says), navigated us to our cottage in the Cotswolds (like it says) .... then broke. The on-off button refused to play ball. And a blank screen is a fat lot of use. Just as well we'd taken OS maps with us.
Amazon reckon a replacement will be with me tomorrow (which is excellent since I only reported the defect yesterday). But will I place my faith in this piece of kit? No. I think I'll still carry maps with me.
Added:
The replacement arrived as promised. (Full marks to Amazon.) However, 'nil points' to Tomtom. This one packed up after less than 48 hours. Once again, the on-off button failed to do its job. Only this time, it wouldn't switch off! (And, in answer to other reviewers, the reset button didn't cure either problem. In my view, Tomtom have some quality control issues to address.)
Oh, and neither unit could find Rosslare, the busiest ferry port in Eire. That doesn't fill me with confidence.
Overall, I think Tomtom have over-extended themselves. They're trying to pack too much in and have pretty much lost the plot. What we need is a box of tricks that doesn't break and can help us navigate. Cut out the rubbish about MP3 players and fancy voices. They're just gimmicks.
I liked their earlier product but have reluctantly given up on Tomtom's latest offering. I've bought a Garmin. I'll let you know how we get on. |
