Review Summary: Fairly good product, poor customer service

Review: First the good points about this Tom Tom Go 910 car sat nav: Speech to text works really well, good clear screen, solidly built (which is useful - see below), once you're locked onto the satellite you stay locked on. I find the MP3 player quite useful, and you can't expect top quality sound without external speakers. It seems pretty good at knowing where the speed cameras are. In terms of navigation, although its no substitute for local knowledge about congestion etc it generally plots pretty sensible routes. Its very easy and intuitive to use. Overall, its my first sat nav and I love using it.

Its not perfect though. It can take what feels like forever to lock onto a satellite and there are some glitches in the software (it became convinced I was in Guam and the only way I could find of rectifying it was to delete the Guam map - I can live without the map of Guam, but I still spent a frustrating hour trying to sort this out). And the power lead doesn't fit very well into the recharging cradle, and can very very easily get knocked out, which is a bit shoddy for such an expensive product.

The main problem, however, is that it was shipped with a faulty car cradle which means I have to position the device so that it rests on the dashboard, which can be fiddly - so fiddly indeed that on a couple of occasions the cradle ended up not properly connected and the unit fell off the windscreen mid-drive. Fortunately the unit has survived these knocks so far. Tom Tom know about the problem with the faulty cradle and offer to supply a new one. However, you are required to enter the serial number via the website, and the website wouldn't accept mine (a common problem from looking at internet forums), so I had to email them. Although it is technically possible to email tom tom, the website is seemingly deliberately set up to make it as hard as possible (and you have to do it via the website or your correspondance gets bounced back). Clearly they would rather their customers didn't contact them. Once I had managed to email, however they did quickly get back to me assuring me that a new cradle would be sent to me if I registered my address details (which I did). Six weeks later, the cradle still hasn't arrived. So now I've gone through the whole website process again to email them to ask where the cradle is. Hopefully I'll have more luck this time.

So, to summarise, a great core product but with some important flaws, especially the customer service (and I regard that as part of what I paid for). As things stand I don't think I'd buy a tom tom again, which is a shame.
