Review: I just thought I'd share my opinion of this TomTom ONE Europe sat nav system. I'm not a particularly technical person and I didn't know that much about GPS systems before I bought it. This is my first GPS system. I wouldn't do without one now.
My opinions on the Tomtom ONE:
1. When it works, it's fantastic. Most of the time. 2. The postcode look up is great for residential addresses 3. It was very easy and quick to set up 4. It's easy to use and navigate the menus 5. I've used it in France (briefly) and Italy and most of the time it was fine 6. Speed camera locations are fairly accurate 7. It's fairly cheap compared to other systems on the market (I can't comment on value because I don't know how good the other systems are and whether they have similar failings)
However:
1. No carry case and home charger. I knew this before I bought it, but I didn't think I'd need a home charger. However actually it's a really useful system to look up routes and so a home charger would have been more beneficial than I anticipated, particularly in view of the fact that it doesn't last that long when it's not on the charger and point 2 below. 2. It loses charge quite quickly if not used. 3. One one occasion (when I REALLY needed it - driving into the centre of Palermo) it just point blank refused to turn on, no matter what I did to it. It hasn't done this since, but then I haven't needed it to work quite as much as I did on that day ! 4. It is rubbish when looking up postcodes of 'buildings' eg clinics, warehouses, schools etc (ie buildings with addresses but no house number) - it just doesn't seem to recognise these (and I've tried quite a few times). You therefore have to put in the road name and location but if it's a very long road, you don't know whereabouts you are going and on which side of the road you are looking. This is a real problem if you use the system mostly for work rather than pleasure. 5. It sometimes misjudges junctions and either tells you to turn left/right when the road carries straight on, or doesn't tell you to turn when you need to, but if you look at the display you can usually figure out where to go. 6. Points of interest are variable - sometimes it will find what you want, other times it is very limited (eg the nearest cashpoint in Rome was in Dover, UK). It seems to be quite good for petrol stations. 7. It beeps for a speed camera regardless of whether the speed camera is on your side or not. It beeps so far in advance of the camera that by the time I actually reach the camera I've forgotten that it's coming up and it doesn't warn you again. 8. The cradle falls off the windscreen on a fairly regular basis. This may be partly 'user error' but I've seen the comment a few times before. 9. When you save a destination to favourites that is just off a road (eg in a school car park) it won't find you a route there again because it doesn't recognise your location (ie not on a road).
